The First Blog-read and comment

Poster Boy- Poster Boy is an anonymous New York City based street artist whose only utensil is a razor. He is known for satiric collage-like works created by cutting out sections of the self-adhesive advertisement posters in the platforms of New York City subway stations, and pasting them back in different positions. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. Poster Boy also refers to a 'Poster Boy movement' where other people produce similar unsigned work in the New York City subways imitating this original artist

"At first, it was just something to keep me occupied while waiting on the subway." [2] “I was playing with the posters, cutting them up" [1] (he carried a razor used at work) and discovered that unlike the cardboard posters in the subway trains, the advertising posters on the subway platforms were printed on a self-adhesive material that could be stuck back down after being torn or cut out. He began to play with available images and text to create humorous “mash-ups” of advertisements. In 2008 alone he has created over 200 manipulated underground posters in NYC subway. He compares the creation of poster “mash-ups” to hip-hop "freestyling" on a microphone.[3] He does not have preconceived notions of what the work will be (“I don’t have anything planned…go there, see something, get inspired and do the work” [4]), but uses the available images, often in a way that relates to current events. One comentator noted: "The pieces generally have a critical edge to them, making comments on the state of society and on the advertisements themselves."[

Poster Boy creates his images by cutting up posters. Banksy by graffitti on the wall. Both are political in nature. You own a museum and want to add a modern piece by one of the two artists. Which arist would you pay to deface your museum. Why? Is one type better? Explain. Be persuasive.

Maisie said: I think what this Poster Boy guy does is really neat and quite hilarious. :D Myself, I hate conglomerate advertising, so that this guy, who's taking them apart and making the mindless wall spam into art with a political statement, is pretty neat, in my humble opinion. Besides, anybody who cuts up Nicholas Cage's face has got to be awesome. x3
But personally, I like Banksy more, because he's creating his art from scratch and not just taking other art and pasting it together in a compelling way. That, and his name is cooler to say. I'd pay him to come deface my museum.

  4. I would chooose Banksy because he makes the art himself.Poster boy takes from posters that someone else designed and turns it into his own.I don't think any kind is better.I like them both equally.-Shawni

  5. Kelci: (I can't spell) I think they're both good and pretty humorous, but I'd prefer Banksy to deface my museum because his work is paint, which seems more indurant than posters, and his is from scatch. Also, Banksy's work doesn't usually have as much current culture in it (i.e. Iron Man appearing in Poster Boy's Iran=Nam thing), which I like better, because it's more original.

I would hire Banksy because while both are creative, Banksy creates his from his own materials which gives him a more diverse subject for art. Poster boy on the other hand can only use what are is pre-existing and change it from there. Because of this I think Banksy would be able to present his topic more clearly and defined.
Also, I like Banksy's style of graffiti and his use of stencils.

  7. I like the article becase poster boy is
unique in art. The way he chages a poster is
cool. Poster boy should travel all over
the world Changing posters. I think he
should do more art. I think posterboy is
trying to make an art statement...

  8. cutting up posters and gluing them back in weird positions is fun, yet hard because the picture wont always turn out fun to look out. well, i think i would put the poster guy in my museum. he can create so much with cutting posters. he can work with color, he can work with shapes and textures. he is taking something that isnt his, but making it his own. it may not be original, but who cares, its still art. i cant just pick one over the other, everyone is different and everyone has there strengths and weaknesses. but honestly, i would rather cut up a poster anyday, unless it is a picture of shia labeouf or edward cullen :)

  9. I'd have to chose Banksy to deface my musuem. I mean don't get me wrong, they both are excellent at what they do. I just like Banksy's work better. I like the look of his work, and the originalilty that's in it. Poster-boy's work just doesn't really catch my eye.

  10. In my own personal opinion, I would prefer to have a work of Banksy's. Not that the whole collage aspect of Poster Boy's advertisments isn't interesting, or humerous, but I personally like the graffitti that Banksy creates, and think it hits a bit closer to home when it comes to making a statement on the political world.

But,like Maisie said, anyone who can do something like that with Nicholas Cage's face gets Brownie points from me. That takes major skill. XD

(not sure if any of this is spelled right, sorry. Horrible grammer skills.)

  11. I would choose Banksy because he didn't take someone elses work and just make a collage with it. Banksy makes his own artwork. Plus he is anonymous and if I'm paying someone to deface my museum, I would want them to bring people from all over to see it. Plus i love Banksys artwork, mainly the ironic ones. Also graffiti art is better in my opinion.

  12. while both are very well done artists i would perfer Poster Boy to come deface my meusum because he jus goes on a random act and transform something so regular into something someone can look at and think about it and also shows a statement not most would say outloud...
although i do like Banksy artwork to...am not sure i would really pay him to deface my meusum...personally am not a rat person...

I would allow Poster Boy to deface my museum, or actually become an asset of it. I really enjoy Banksy, i do. But Poster Boy is something new and fresh. He doens't just do the normal writing on the wall junk. Neither does Banksy [its not junk, not normal etc]. However i really enjoy the controversy of what Poster Boy does and how he relates the already present materials to a present day conflict or something going on somewhere in the world. So, i would let Poster Boy first. and in a week or two i would contact banksy. :)

  15. Kt S... says:: I don't think that I would be able to choose between the two. I really like the way poster boy cuts up random posters and makes them into something that is important and makes sense about the world. But if I HAD to choose, it would have to Banksy. I would choose Banksy because I like the way that he makes a statement about things that are going on around the world. I like the way that he doesn't always put his message right out there. He puts things in a way that makes you think about it and wonder what he was really thinking when he created his "graffiti".To me, it isn't graffiti. =] But i really don't think that one is better than the other because they both have their way of expressing things and ideas, just like any other artist!

  17. I would have Banksy in my museum instead of Poster Boy because i believe Banksy is more original. He creates his own graffiti with his spray paint. I think that is just pretty awesome in itself. Pepsi

  18. Oh please, you could obviously pay both to deface your museum. I mean, they are both similar in nature, and displaying both of them would result in a fairly intense gallery showing. Both are art, I don't feel that I can credit either as being more or less fantastic.

I would allow Banksy to deface my museum. The main reason i would pick banksy is because to me, he is more creative, his work requires more time and he is the one that draws the image. To me anyone could cut up posters and with cutting up posters he's not really making it his it's just comone elses work turned around. I just think Banksy is more creative.

    THE END!!!!
